Chapter Ten

McKenna

“Cian! Cian,” Rushing down the hallway, I wave a hand while Cian turns to face me. He’s walking away from our father’s office, so he must’ve had some sort of meeting with him. Interest raises his brows, and I grab his hand to tug him through the nearest door and shut it sharply. “I need to talk to you, like right now.”

“In the bathroom?” Glancing around in alarm, I nod before shaking my head viciously. Anxiety grips my heart in a vice, and my skin prickles harshly as I hold up both my hands. My apprehension earns me a frown, but Cian sits on the toilet to gesture me with a flick of his wrist. “Go ahead, Mick.”

“O-okay,” Turning on the sink just to drown out our conversation, I sit on the side of the tub lightly. “So, what do you know about the Moroz family? They’re Ukrainian. Has Dad done a deal or two with them before?”

“The Moroz family? What do you know about them?” Such utter disgust dribbles from Cian’s tone that I flinch, and alarm brightens his eyes before he cups his chin thoughtfully. He takes a breath in preparation as I hold mine in trepidation. “Those people are rabid beasts. Why do you wanna know, Mick?”

“Uh . . . it’s just,” Licking my lips as I stumble over my words, my brain frantically tries to squeeze out an excuse. “Nat-Natalie told me I was only hurting myself by never listening to anything Dad says … that I wasn’t doing myself any favors by ignoring everything he tries to teach me out of spite. But you know, I can’t really tell him that, so I-I thought you might know.”

“She finally got through to you, huh? Good for her,” Sitting back, satisfied with my answer, my brother nods as his thoughts blaze brightly from his eyes. “The Moroz family’s responsible for a localized genocide in Ukraine at the turn of the century. Taras Moroz was one of the family heads at the time, along with his brother and their father. They were basically a triad of criminal enterprising. Everything spiraled out of control after the Soviet Union fell, much like it did to the entire region. Life became penniless and harder than it already had been, and it drove people to do things they wouldn’t normally do.”

“A genocide?” My lips tremble in fear, and I cover my mouth to hide my horror unsuccessfully. “Why?”

“It happened a lot in that part of the world. I think it’s less of a why it happened than how the Moroz family dealt with it. The Moroz family was at the top. They basically owned everything that came in and went out of the region. I’m sure you can see where this is heading, Mick,” The blood drains from my face when Cian pauses, and I shake my head slightly. “Moroz had a son and a daughter, an older daughter. Their territory was doing okay. But that’s arguably worse than failing, because other people wanted that stability.
